Katherine O’Truk is an artist and art educator living in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Inspired by snapshots from her own life, she creates paintings about moments of rest, connection, and renewal. In order to communicate the idea of a moment of pause, the women in O’Truk’s paintings are shown seated. Sometimes the figures are represented in a pair or group, finding peace in a shared moment together. Other times, figures are shown alone, finding renewal within themselves. The compositions are an examination of how layers of paint and fields of color can be paired with representational forms of the figure to convey the essence of a subject and setting. O’Truk hopes that the suggestion of place, and abstract representation of a moment, makes the paintings relatable to the viewer, inspiring them to find rest and renewal in their own lives.
